Chievley Services

Chieveley services.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Granny is a short story written by Ben Aaronovitch. It was an 'extra' in the hardback Waterstones edition of Foxglove Summer, and is included in Tales from the Folly.

Plot[]

Peter and Beverley are transporting Not-Nicole from Herefordshire to London, after the events of Foxglove Summer. At a late night stop at Chieveley Services on the M4, Peter tries to help with a broken Mercedes and realises that its microchips have been destroyed by magic. In the car, the brothers Richard and Jasper Philips were driving their elderly and terminally ill mother Edna from London to Swindon, actually against her express will, so that they could care for her at their home. Edna has blown the car's electronics to stop them. Apparently she has been able to do magic for a year, probably because of her brain tumor. Peter explains this is legally a kidnapping, but Beverley persuades everyone to let her take Edna to Mama Thames to live out her last months since most of the Thames daughters are qualified nurses.
